.SHORT TERM... 332 AM CDT

Today through Sunday night...

Early morning radar imagery depicts a cold front moving southeast and approaching the Interstate 80 corridor. Breezy northerly winds will spread cooler air across the area this morning, with a few isolated showers diminishing across the eastern parts of the forecast area. Morning clouds associated with the frontal zone will move off to the east, with partly cloudy conditions expected for the remainder of the day as instability stratocu field develops this afternoon. An exception will be downwind of Lake Michigan into northwest Indiana, where the cool air spreading down the length of the lake will produce more cloud cover, and perhaps a few lake induced rain showers especially this afternoon and this evening. Winds, gusting around 20 mph especially near the lake, will shift northeasterly late today/tonight, which will likely spread lake effect cloud cover into far northeast IL, with a few sprinkles possible this evening. Highs this afternoon should range from the mid 60`s over far northeast IL, to the low-mid 70`s farther south of I-80.

Surface high pressure builds across the upper Midwest tonight, with the ridge axis extending from northeast WI into northwest IL by sunrise Saturday morning. Generally clear skies and light winds, combined with dry air will likely support widespread low temps in the lower 40`s across north central IL, and probably a few upper 30`s in the coolest of spots. Some lake clouds may linger across far northeast IL into early Saturday morning.

High pressure slowly drifts east across the region Saturday, with east winds maintaining cool temperatures in the 60`s across most of the area. Winds gradually shift more southeast into Sunday, as flow aloft become southwesterly and a warm up begins. Onshore winds north of Chicago will keep those areas coolest, in the mid- upper 60`s, while areas farther west and south moderate into the low-mid 70`s.

.LONG TERM... 332 AM CDT

Monday through Thursday...

High amplitude upper pattern will be in place to start next week, with a deep long wave trough over western North America, and an upper ridge across the east. Deep south-southwest flow from the Plains to the Midwest will support another round of much above normal warmth across the forecast area into mid-week, with 850 mb temps progged to approach +15C Tuesday and Wednesday. 925 mb temps in excess of +20C would potentially support daytime highs in the mid-upper 80`s for both days, after around 80/low 80`s Monday. Record highs are 91/90 for Chicago for the 3rd and 4th, and 90 both days for Rockford.

Medium range guidance solutions begin to diverge by the middle of the week however, as the upper ridge retrogrades southwest across the lower Mississippi and Arklatex regions, and short wave energy flattening the upper flow across the Great Lakes region. Recent runs of the ECMWF bring the core of the upper ridge farther southwest, and bring a more amplified upper trough across the upper Midwest Wednesday into Thursday, with a surface cold front pushing southeast across the cwa. While the GFS and Canadian solutions hold up the front just north of the IL/WI border, the spread in model solutions does lower confidence for maintaining such warm temps by days 6-7. Presence of the frontal boundary also suggests an increased potential for clouds/precip during the Wednesday-Thursday time frame, though again confidence is fairly low given large spread in model solutions.

.AVIATION... For the 12Z TAFs...

Main forecast concern for the period will be winds.

A cold front has pushed through the terminals early this morning. Winds are veering to nwly behind the front. Strong pressure rises across the area as low pressure lifts through the eastern Great Lakes and high pressure spreads across the upper Mississippi Valley, combined with modest cold advection, will lead to increasing gustiness through the morning hours. Wind direction should continue to veer from nwly to nely by early afternoon as the high continues to build east across the western Great Lakes. Winds will remain gusty closer to Lake Michigan into the early evening hours. As wind direction becomes more nely, some lake effect cloudiness is likely to develop tonight with flow becoming more directly off of the lake. A few sprinkles ot light showers are possible tonight, but coverage should be too sparse to mention in the TAFs at this time.

.MARINE... 330 AM CDT

Winds are turning northwesterly as a cold front pushes south of the lake early this morning. Winds will continue to veer to northerly later this morning, with prevailing winds up to 25 kt and occasional gusts to 30 kt possible. The strong winds will set up dangerous conditions for small craft along the southern Lake Michgian nearshore waters through Saturday morning. There will also be a chance for lake effect showers with waterspouts through later this morning, especially over eastern sections of the lake, as cooler air overspreading the relatively warmer waters sets u Pstrong instability. High pressure should build across the lake on Saturday, which should result in lighter and more variable winds, followed by breezy southerly winds late Sunday into early next week as the high pushes to the east and a trough of low pressure moves across the northern and central plains.
