.SHORT TERM... 141 PM CDT

Through Saturday...

Deep upper trough axis will continue to shift east away from the region today while upper ridging builds towards the Upper Midwest. At the surface, high pressure will continue to settle over the western Great Lakes region providing modest easterly flow locally. A few lingering light showers and sprinkles will persist over far northeast IL and northwest IN this afternoon but should diminish in coverage by this evening as surface ridge becomes more established over the area and col area where the showers are focused shifts to our south. Building upper ridge in the west and onshore flow in the east has set up a bit of a thermal gradient across the CWA this afternoon and expect similar conditions Saturday with highs in the mid 70s across the southwest CWA and mid 60s northeast. Expect mostly sunny skies Saturday.

.LONG TERM... 205 PM CDT

Saturday night through Friday...

Quiet weather in the local area will continue through next week as the area remains under the influences of a large upper ridge. Hence with dry conditions... generally sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights are expected through the week. A weak northeast surface flow Monday through Thursday will keep afternoon max temps a few degrees cooler near Lake Michigan... with warmer overnight lows in the city and near the Lake Michigan shoreline as well. With the northeast flow stiffening a bit both Tuesday and Wednesday... swim risk conditions will need to be monitored for Lake Michigan beaches.

Model guidance showing the remnants of Irma moving north into the Ohio Valley by late Tuesday/early Wednesday but blocking pattern and building heights aloft preventing any further progress northwestward per current model trends. Hence will maintain a dry forecast through the week across the entire forecast area with the next chances of rain appearing beyond this forecast period.

.AVIATION... For the 18Z TAFs...

High pressure will continue to build south across the western Great Lakes through the rest of today. Modest northeast winds around 10kt have already overspread the terminals and will persist through the period, tapering some overnight and veering to the ESE Saturday. A few lingering MVFR level ceilings are in place over far northeastern Illinois, and cannot rule out ORD and MDW briefly becoming MVFR this afternoon, but there are greater chances in staying VFR.

.MARINE... 205 PM CDT

A sprawling area of high pressure over Lake Superior will dominate conditions across the western Great Lakes through the weekend. A northerly wind on Lake Michigan will turn east overnight as the high center moves to northern Lake Huron by late Saturday. As the high pressure center continues into the eastern Great Lakes Sunday and Monday... a ridge will extended back across central Lake Michigan. A weak cold front will then sag south into northern Lake Michigan late Tuesday into early Wednesday.

A somewhat stiffening northeast flow both tonight and Saturday... and again Tuesday and Wednesday... will result in choppy conditions in the nearshore waters along the Illinois and Indiana shorelines.
