.DISCUSSION... Issued at 247 PM CDT Wed Oct 9 2024
A weak cold front shifting southwest across the area today will stall toward central Illinois tonight as an elongated surface ridge drifts east of the forecast area. Clear to mostly clear skies should prevail through Friday amid warming temperatures and winds gradually veering southwest. A low over northern Ontario Thursday night will then push a weakening dry cold front over the area Friday night into Saturday. Ahead of the front, temps into the low to mid 80s will push RH values under 30% while winds gust over 20 mph Friday afternoon. This will result in another elevated fire risk for much of the area.
As the front stalls over of just south of the CWA on Saturday, a feed of modest low-level Gulf moisture will intersect the front and approaching mid-level wave to the northwest. Guidance remains mixed on whether the moisture will arrive far enough north or early enough to support a band of rain developing across a portion of the area late Saturday morning into the evening. Will maintain chance PoPs much of the area centered on Saturday afternoon.
After an extended period of near to above normal temps, a significant cool down is expected late weekend into early next week. Moisture appears sufficient for some sporadic diurnally driven showers Sunday and especially Monday we well as a higher coverage of lake effect showers in northwest Indiana Sunday evening through Tuesday.
Blustery northwest winds will usher in the coolest air so far this season as a core of H8 temps as low as -5C shift across the Great Lakes region. After max temps struggle to rise out of the mid 50s Monday and Tuesday, low temps in the low to mid 30s are likely. With the main surface ridge remaining west of the forecast area Monday night, continued light NW gradient flow may limit coverage of frost. However, the ridge will be near or potentially over part of the area Tuesday night and may support a potential for widespread frost.
