.DISCUSSION... Issued at 223 PM CDT Mon Oct 7 2024

The unusually benign weather will continue this week. High pressure will slowly migrate eastward from the Cornbelt this afternoon to the upper Ohio Valley/mid-Atlantic by the end of the week. The result will be sunny days, clear nights, with a gradual warming trend the next few days. Expect nearly ideal radiational cooling tonight given the calm/nearly calm winds and clear skies. Low temps tonight should be able to drop into the upper 30s to near 40 outside of the urban heat island region of the Chicago metro. Some of the typically colder locations in our CWA will probably dip into the mid 30s with even some patchy frost possible early Tuesday morning.

After topping out near normal in the 60s today, Tuesday through Thursday should see highs in the 70s, though a wind off the lake Thursday should keep temps a bit cooler near the lake Thursday afternoon. By Friday, a cold front is expected to drop southeast into the western Great Lakes/upper Mississippi Valley. Tightening pressure gradient ahead of this front should result in gusty southwest winds, which should help push temps up into the low to mid 80s. If high cloudiness isn`t too extensive, it is possible we could end up a couple/few degrees warmer than that given some compressional warming ahead of the front and the very dry conditions. Milton should ensure that little/no Gulf moisture will advect into the area ahead of the cold front, so deep mixing, gusty winds, and near record warm could result in a day of heightened fire danger Friday.

More seasonable temperatures are expected over the weekend with highs mostly in the 60s. A more formidable (at least for this unseasonably warm autumn) reinforcing shot of colder air could arrive by Monday, bringing some below average temperatures, though longer range guidance suggests that that cold shot could be pretty short lived as well. Precip chances through the rest of this week look to be near zero, and even this weekend looks dry with very little threat of rain.
